Time Out Melbourne

This event has finished

The rural city of Wangaratta – known for its locally-grown produce and family-owned vineyards – is opening its gates again for the annual Jazz and Blues Festival which, this year, hits the quarter of a century milestone. Over 300 musicians will be performing in over 80 concerts throughout Wangaratta’s venues during the long weekend.

Headlining this year is American guitarist/singer and Blues Hall-of-Famer Joe Louis Walker, and multi-talented singer/songwriter and harmonica and didgeridoo player Harper. The artist lineup includes the best of Australia’s jazz and blues talent alongside international musicians from America, Italy and New Zealand.

The festival will also showcase some of Australia’s best voices with an impressive lineup of jazz vocalists including Emma Park from The Voice season two, Hetty Kate performing songs from her recent album Dim All The Lights, and Julie O’Hara, performing with gypsy swing-inspired group Ultrafox.

This year’s program includes artist talks, master classes, and the National Jazz Awards. With the competition instrument changing each year, 2014 will see ten of the best jazz guitarists compete for a $12,000 prize, the chance to record for ABC Classic FM’s Jazztrack with Mal Stanley and an invitation to perform at the 2015 Stonnington Jazz Festival.
