Time Out Melbourne

Time Out gets some help from artistic director Adrian Jackson to navigate our way through this year’s stellar programme

The Stonnington Jazz Festival will be swinging into town with a super swag of swinging acts that will be sure to please the ears of both jazz aficionados and newbies. Meaty bass lines, syncopated rhythms and plenty of brassy soul jams will be reverberating throughout venues spread across town, including Malvern Town Hall, Chapel Off Chapel and Red Bennies. The festival also focuses on bringing together established players and composers with the future of jazz music. So whether you’re into blues, rock, smooth, soul, bluesy or west coast there will surely be a gig to suit your style. Festival artistic director, Adrian Jackson picked out some of his highlights from the extensive programme – and we're pretty jazzed (not sorry) about them.

The Jex Saarelaht Trio

Two bright new talents hit the stage with a stalwart of the Australian jazz scene as the Jex Saarelaht Trio. Sydney pianist Mike Nock will be joined by two of his personal favourite musicians from Melbourne, saxophonist Julien Wilson and guitarist Stephen Magnusson.

The Hoodangers and Flap!

This local-act double bill will be filling Malvern Town Hall with fresh new sounds for one night only. The Hoodangers started out playing classic jazz, but now incorporate reggae, funk and folk into their repertoire. Flap! will be proving why they have an exclamation point in their name by fusing calypso, jazz and pop music.

Paul Williamson's Hammond Jazz Party

Paul Williamson, Mike Jordan and Tim Neal will be hosting a jazzy shindig at Chapel Of Chapel. The evening has become a key fixture of the Stonnington Jazz Festival calendar and you can expect a bunch of guest appearances and RnB tinged jazz jams.

James Morrison and Joe Chindamo

Sydney jazz superman James Morrison, will be joined by his friend and collaborator, Melbourne maestro Joe Chindamo. Expect rearranged classics alongside, a tribute to the late jazz giant Dave Brubeck and tracks from their aptly titled 2006 release 2x2.

Michelle Nicolle and Kristin Berardi

These talented women will be coming together to play for two nights at the festival’s key venue, Malvern Town Hall. The sultry, vocal-focused evening is set to showcase the talents of the ladies and their respective bands.
