Fear not Franz fans, the boys are still coming

Franz Ferdinand’s frontman Alex Kapranos tells Andrew P Street all about…

…Right Thoughts, Right Words, Right Action being Franz’s party album. Aye, we really enjoyed making the album. And I think you can hear it – you can always hear when a band’s enjoying themselves, it doesn’t matter how dark the subject matter of the music might be, if they enjoy the actual performance you tend to enjoy listening to it yourself.

…Franz being a bunch of friends first and a band second. It’s like having flatmates – sometimes that can be so good and so much more rewarding than living on your own, but sometimes it can be so frustrating. Often the thing that ruins a band dynamic is the pettiness of everyday irritations that if you don’t address become magnified. Larger transgressions because they’re so big that they draw enough attention to themselves to be addressed. It’s the little things that seem too trivial to be addressed that become enormous.

…‘Evil Eye’ basically being Franz’s own ‘Backstreet’s Back’. Aha! I do like Dr Dre’s production, that’s what I had running through my head, like some of the Snoop Dogg stuff, or Britney early pop moments. And then ‘Goodbye Lovers and Friends’ has a real Turkish pop beat: if you’re in Berlin and you hear all the Turkish guys drive around, it’s all got that beat to it.

…Not worrying about being a bunch of pasty Scottish boys trying to do hip hop with guitars. No: I always know that if we try to pull that together and perform it as Franz Ferdinand, it’s never going to sound anything like that at all because we’re going to get it really wrong.

Right Thoughts, Right Words, Right Action is out now through Domino/Universal
