Around the traps: Music blogs

Blogs are a great vessel for steering through the ever-fluid music scene.

One of the earliest, and certainly a continuing excellent source of local music coverage, Who the Bloody Hell Are They? was launched in July 2006 by Jerry Soer and Dom Alessio (of Triple J’s Home & Hosed) and is now curated by Melissa Tan (pictured) in Melbourne and Matt Hickey in Sydney. A daily visit to the site will provide you with videos, mp3s and knowledgeable opinions about a diverse range of musical styles. If you didn’t know, now you know.

For succinct, honest and illuminating music content, Polaroids of Androids have you well covered. Specialising in independent rock, lo-fi and garage, and much besides, this site first appeared in 2006 under the authorship of Jonny Nail and Mike Pierce.

Also something of a veteran in blog terms, Rose Quartz has been dispensing wisdom and music tips since May 2008. Anyone visiting this site can expect expert advice on new and emerging artists, and recommendations for your next favourite band. Contributors to Rose Quartz have access to the hearts and hard-drives of Australia and New Zealand’s underground royalty and under-represented stars.

An incredibly comprehensive survey of modern music in its ever expanding forms, East to West covers new and hybrid electronic forms, as well as post-anything and everything relevant. The blog is run by Sydney’s Holly Friedlander Liddicoat who also contributes to the last chappie our blog roll.

Another online outpost on the frontline of experimental music, Life Aquatic finds meaning in the miscellany of mp3 culture, and filters some of the most interesting and important Australian-only music to curious visitors.
