Favourite haunts in Melbourne?
There are a few. You'll find me at Yarra Hotel in Abbotsford more often than not. The Commercial Club Hotel in Fitzroy is another favourite along with the NSC and the Railway Hotel (800 Nicholson St, Fitzroy North). For coffee, and daytime food, Boundary Espresso (107 Plenty Rd, Preston) and for night food I'm a big fan of One Noodle Friendship (417-419 High St, Preston).
You're an Adelaide boy... Where have you settled in Melbourne and why?
I just naturally settled around the north east. It seemed good then, and I've just stuck to what I know since. The 86 tram line has seemed to feature heavily.
Your favourite Melbourne recording studio?
Adelphia studios is great. It's a great big high ceiling, great sounding room. Always made to feel very welcome here. Have done a lot of recording in Tender Trap studio, in Westgarth in recent times with Roger Bergodaz, so that feels like a bit of a second home.
Favourite hangover cure in Melbourne?
A sleep-in followed by yum cha and beer at Gold Leaf (417 High St, Preston 3072. 03 9470 2882). May not cure, but certainly a good way to experience it.
Favourite venues to play?
I've only played there a couple of times, but I love the Forum Theatre. I've been to plenty of shows there as a punter, and it's just an incredible space. Places like that and the Palais need to be preserved.
Any venues you’ve played a residency at?
When the Vandas first formed we had a Thursday night residency at Chick Ratten's Rainbow Hotel in Fitzroy. It's very memorable time for me, and a real education. I met a lot of good people around that time.
First Melbourne venue you played at?
I think the first venue I played was the Builders Arms in Fitzroy. They also, on the same night gave me my first job over here. Thanks, the Builders Arms.
You can have the Ape's 'Crawl Back' for free. Their debut album is released in September, followed by a national tour.
