When writing songs do you have an ultimate listener in mind?
I don't think I think of it in that way... it's more like I'm hungry and I'm going to eat. Mostly the food is enjoyable but sometimes you're unsatisfied and you end up searching for something else. Ultimately if it moves me in the moment when I'm writing it – and if it's on repeat in my head in the middle of the night – then I'm on to something.
What have your muses and inspirations been for this album?
The Ghostbusters soundtrack on tape. I haven't heard it since I was little but whenever I do electronic drums I imagine the sound comes from that movie from the '80s. Same with Limahl's 'Never Ending Story'. Red tail hawks are my animal obsession, we have them around our house; I could watch them all day.
What five words will we find on this album, which should whet our appetite?
Diploid; Ouroboros; Primordial; Crone, Foetus.
What do you enjoy listening to that might surprise us?
Right now I can't stop listening to Christian Death and Prince. It's really doing it for me.
Do you notice a difference between male and female journos when it comes to interpreting your work?
Not really – it's more a personality thing with journos. Although a female will understand when I'm bleeding and cramping.
Is your daughter Camille showing musical talent yet?
She's always made up her own songs, which are really funny and cute, but she's more obsessed with animals than anything else.
Diploid Love is released on Fri Apr 25 (Caroline)
