Time Out Melbourne

A neglected venue is getting a refit, to step up and fill the glittery shoes of the late Palace

The old Melbourne Pavilion in Flemington is to undergo a major refit with the idea that it will fill the gap left by the Palace on Bourke Street. It will be reborn as Pavilion Live. But who is behind it? Some big names... but we're told it's to remain a secret for now.

Their spokesperson, entertainment lawyer Andrew Watt, says: "Melbourne is well served by a brilliant collection of well-operated small venues and venues of the 900-1500 capacity, but there is a definite need for a venue that is the next step up from there – a venue that is large enough to accommodate national level touring bands but still offers a more intimate experience than a stadium-type venue.”

The Melbourne Pavilion is a heritage-listed art deco building that currently serves as a function venue, hosting weddings, corporate functions and other 'occasions'. The owners have applied to increase the capacity to 2,250 and will focus on hosting live music from touring bands. Expect a launch in September and the first bands in October.
