Newcastle: Eyes on the street

Watt makes a good Newcastle street? The answer is staring you in the face...

The answer to this question was, according to American urbanist Jane Jacobs: “eyes upon the street, eyes belonging to those we might call the natural proprietors of the street.”

The eyes of old and new Newcastle look back at each other in this epic projection celebrating Watt Street’s changing face.

Residents, shopkeepers, mayors, military men, sailors, bar-maids, doctors, lawyers and children from the great and glorious past all stare down from the walls of the United Service Club on Watt Street.

They live again through the shimmering prism of artworks, film, photography and pioneering maps and Awabakal legends reawakened from deep in the city’s archives. United Services Club, 57 Watt St.
