Hellenic Republic

If going Greek means figs with salty, squeaky grilled saganaki cheese for breakfast, sign us up! Hellenic also pairs eggs with traditional Greek sides like spinach-filled pastries, smoked lamb and wild greens. Early morning plate smashing is frowned upon.
434 Lygon St, Brunswick East. $12.50.

Cibi

Cibi serves a traditional Japanese breakfast on weekends where you’ll get a bowl of miso soup, brown rice, grilled salmon (grilled wedge of pumpkin for vegetarians), Japanese potato salad, pickles and tamago (sweetened omelette).
45 Keele St, Collingwood. $14.50.

Duchess of Spotswood

The British-themed Duchess of Spotswood delivers offal done well. Their Idle Tongues dish sees a just-seared slice of ox tongue perched atop a slab of crisp pork neck with smoked semolina and a fried duck egg. Good lord! 87 Hudsons Rd, Spotswood. $17.50.

Sonido!

Nothing says power breakfast like a Colombian hot pocket. Arepas are disks of corn dough, grilled and stuffed with the likes of fresh white cheese and a pat of butter (arepa de queso), or topped with super-soft stewed beef and guacamole. 69 Gertrude St, Fitzroy. $8.50-$11.50.

Monk Bodhi Dharma

MBD is a Buddhist sanctuary in the South dishing up vegetarian and vegan friendly foods. Zen it up with Yacutan peasant beans – red and black kidney beans cooked to melting point and spiked with house-made chilli jam. Rear 202 Carlisle St, Balaclava. $14.50.
