Time Out crowned the champions of Melbourne's restaurant scene at the third annual Time Out Melbourne Food Awards
The Time Out Melbourne Food Awards is the one night of the year when we recognise Melbourne’s champions of the restaurant scene – and throw a party to remember.
More than 220 of the city’s culinary experts, professional eaters and Time Out readers gathered at Gazi (George Calombaris’s casual Greek restaurant). Comedian and much-loved DJ Andrew McClelland (of Finishing School and Yeh Yeh fame) kicked off the festivities, fuelled by the best of Gazi’s menu. Drinks were from our sponsors, Appletiser (making Appletiser Botanical Cocktails), Yenda beers and Tyrrell’s Wines, alongside our apparel sponsor Cargo Crew.
The room exploded with cheers as the coveted Restaurant of the Year award went to Flinders Lane Japanese restaurant Kappo. In fact, Japanese restaurants fared exceptionally well this year, with sushi masters Minamishima in Richmond picking up the award for Best Fine Dining Restaurant and super-popular ramen joint Hakata Gensuke winning Best Bang For Buck.
Chef of the Year was Scott Pickett, whose talents have shone through at three venues this year (Estelle, ESP and St Crispin). Hana Assafiri, whose Moroccan Soup Bar has chalked up 17 years as a North Fitzroy institution, received this year’s Legend Award for outstanding contribution to Melbourne’s food scene.
