Put your opposable thumbs to work at this crafty new café

First published on . Updated on .

If you like sticking cute things to other cute things, prepare to wet your hand-stitched britches with excitement. Crafternoon is a café where you can get your art on with face-masks, sparkly things, macaroni and everyone’s favourite childhood snack – Clag glue. If you’ve never tried the non-toxic paste, now’s your chance, but if you’d rather ride a sugar high, the lovely, pinny-toting Teagan Cumerford will bring her crafty cakes (how about a spiced carrot muffin with a cream cheese centre?) till you beg her to stop.

Cumerford moved to Melbourne a year ago in search of work, but finding it hard to get a job, she decided to live the dream and make cakes and playdough instead. Every Etsy lover in town must be kicking themselves.

The coffee is a little light on in a latte but as part of an ice cream’n’whipped cream float it’s ace. As is the French toast – thick slabs of fruity bread lightly egg-dunked, sizzled in butter and slathered with tart yoghurt and apricots.

All-you-can-craft access to the collage table is $7 while the fixings for facemasks and badges are $3. If you’re not ready for advanced things like scissors, free pencils and paper are available to add to the doodle collection that dominates inch of wall and decoupage covered floor. Think craft is for sissies? Our favourite sketch ‘Roland the heroine-addicted rat’ begs to differ.
