South Yarra's take on mod-Mex is piquant, but a touch pricey
The menu at Maya Tequila Bar and Grill may be small but it’s certainly proffering some left-of-the-middle “Mexican” items – duck quesadillas with cucumber chutney and hoisin anyone? Bring a friend as these tapas style dishes are designed to share and no one really wants to drink alone. We recommend the cheesy cactus and zucchini bake or the slow baked meatballs in chipotle sauce to start, washed down with a lime stuffed Dos Equis and a side of top-shelf tequila. House-made hot sauce is moreish; a tangy blend of tomato, vinegar, habanero, jalapeno and chipotle which gives the share plates an original kick. Although we must say they're pushing their luck in the price department: $7 for a can of Tecate is bordering on ridiculous, even for South Yarra.
