Craving great Mexican food and tequila? Mamasita’s your kind of place
They play their music on vinyl. There are terrariums as far as the eye can see. The tiny upstairs room is so packed that the lines spill right down the staircase and into the street.
Is it the Mexican soft drinks (lemon and mandarin!), the blackened corn covered in cheese, or is it the amazing range of tequila? Who can say, but the mix of cool and delicious has Melbourne clamouring for the Mamasita goods.
Bookings taken for groups of 8-10.

This is a fun place with a lively party atmosphere, although the Latin music was a smidge too loud and you could see tables of any more than four people battling to hear each other. Don’t know if this is a tactic to keep the tables turning but afraid it would put me off going back for a while or ever going with a bigger group. The service was friendly and efficient, and we were amazed that we only had to wait 10 minutes to get a table on a Friday night as it was rammed. Food was slightly hit ‘n miss: The four little tostaditas filled with chunks of white fish and guacamole were delicious, but the braised beef and chorizo-filled tacos were surprisingly bland and needed to be livened up with a generous dollop of chilli sauce. Rather more interesting and tasty was the zesty quinoa salad and bullhorn chillies stuffed with wild mushrooms, pepitas, epazote and pumpkin sauce. Overall, I’d recommend a visit and think it’s great to see a Mexican resto with an obvious focus on quality and authenticity.
