Time Out Melbourne

Our top finds at one of Melbourne’s coolest night markets

Cadia Belante
Cadia Belante is a Melbourne designer with an eye for the avant-garde and a heart for sustainable fashion. Each piece of Belante’s gear is one-of-a-kind and fashioned from sleeping bags otherwise destined for landfill. A lot of Belante’s garments are also multi-purpose – for instance, via a series of strategically placed zips, her Unisex Morph Jackpack converts from a jacket to a poncho to a backpack.

Chehehe is a local artist who has fashioned a travelling collection of curios he has aptly named a Museum of Fine Oddities (MOFO, get it?). Inspired by space and the concept of time travel, his work has a retro-futuristic, ’50s atomic art feel to it. His zines and stickers make for great gifts, if you can bear to part with them.

Elephants and Robots
Proving yet again that necessity is the mother of invention, Marty Gordon, a former product designer and totally keen cyclist, made items that he needed in order to get about on two wheels. Happily, he discovered that others needed them just as much. Gordon is old school – he makes all of his wares (backpacks, bike bags, phone bags etc) on a ’56 Singer sewing machine, hand-picking fabrics that resist wear and tear.

Meet me in Shermer
Named after ’80s teen movie auteur John Hughes’ fictional town of Shermer, Lisa Gillard’s operation merges her passion for pop culture with her love of correspondence. Gillard designs and prints her range of wryly funny greeting cards locally, which reference everything from Lionel Ritchie (‘Hello’) to Jean-Claude Van Damme (Damme I love you).
