Rose Street Art Market

Fitzroy, Saturdays

This Fitzroy den is bursting with arts and craft that scream, “buy me”. With mini cacti, hand-sewn dresses, nightmarish soft toys and jewellery made from just about everything are on sale, you’re bound to find a gift with a pinch of individuality.

The Esplanade Market St Kilda

St Kilda, Sundays

This market presents Melbourne’s finest creative folk, selling artwork, photography, illustration, handmade jewellery, toys, stationery and body products. These markets have been open every Sunday since 1970 all year round, with no sign of slowing down.

Dandenong Markets

Dandenong

Worth the schlep? Absolutely. Every motherloving spice, seed and grain from Afghanistan to India and Ethiopia is available for sale at what is without doubt Melbourne’s most culturally diverse food market.

Prahran Market

Prahran

Here you’ll find a goose merchant, exotic nut vendor and mushroom man, all of whom are experts on their wares. Coffee up at Market Lane and beware the ham lady, unless you want to swap all your money for sweet slices of pig (trust us, she’s a sorceress).

Fed Square Book Market

Melbourne, Saturdays

Operated by a revolving door of Australian booksellers, there are around 5,000 new and second-hand titles encompassing all the genres. There’s such a range of popular and obscure titles that just about anyone who stops by for a browse is likely to miss their train!

Camberwell Sunday Market

Camberwell, Sundays

Operating since 1976, this is Melbourne’s biggest marketplace for pre-loved wares, with 370 outdoor stalls. Find anything from a string of pearls to hardwood furniture – you and your home can get a cheap makeover. Don’t leave any stone unturned.

South Melbourne Market

South Melbourne

Multiple butchers, bakers, grocers and fishmongers, fortune tellers and snack stands making good use of the produce at hand (hit Evening Star for some fresh grilled scampi if you’re down for a snack) make this one of the best fresh markets in the city.
