Time Out Melbourne

We catch up with two bloggers who are taking on the world one #fashstagram at a time

Give us a run-down of your style...

Lauren Brain (The Cut and Paste, pictured in glasses): I love wearing colour and prints, and lots of accessories. Overall it’s pretty casual: I probably wear jeans about six days a week.

Jess Dempsey (What Would Karl Do) I call myself fashion confident. I would probably be even more eccentric in my styling, but if I don’t pare it down here in Melbourne I’ll get looked at like I’m cuckoo!

What do you love about Melbourne style?

LB: One of the reasons I love Melbourne overall is because it’s so diverse. You hear about Melburnians wearing black, black, black, but I don’t find that to be the case.

JD: There are definitely pockets of different fashion. You have the shoppers down at Chapel Street who wear sleek black and heels. Your shoppers in Brunswick have a more street style vibe. It reflects the culture around us.

Where do you love to shop in Melbourne?

LB: Zara’s great. I do most of my shopping in the city and love Alice Euphemia in Flinders Lane, or Alpha 60, Gorman and Acne at the GPO. For splurges it’s always Grace Boutique or Green With Envy, and I love the girls from Kuwaii. I feel strongly about supporting local labels where I can.

JD: I like to support up and coming Australian designers – I find they’re a little more affordable. I bought this amazing one-off jacket by a local designer called Queen Khan, which is stocked at Lady Petrova off Flinders Lane. Green With Envy really support Australian designers too. There’s also a great label called Alessa and I love White Suede and Shakuhachi. I also go to Mossman.

What are your favourite fashion pieces from your personal collection?

LB: I have a khaki leather jacket that comes out every winter, along with a wool coat I bought in Paris. Another favourite is a digital-print Dion Lee (stocked at Green With Envy) dress. At the moment I’m loving my new Alexander Wang (stocked at Green With Envy) black patent shoulder bag, and my Dita glasses (stocked at Harrolds, 325 Flinders Ln, Melbourne). I’m always wearing glasses.

JD: Definitely that Queen Khan jacket I mentioned before, I can’t wait to wear it. I’ve got this awesome Mossman leather quilted skirt that I wore all through summer – and I’m now wearing with stockings in winter.
