Time Out Melbourne

We’re talking goth, steampunk, punk, rockabilly and everything in between. Here’s where to get the look

Heaving with goth, punk and metal clothes for men and women, this nightclub-adjacent store stocks knee-high patent leather platform boots, a whole range of studded and spiked accessories, and clothing by alternative brands including Tripp NYC, Sourpuss, Darkside, Demonia and Too Fast. Melbourne.

Victorian Gothic

Beautiful custom-made steel-boned corsets are the specialty of this Fitzroy boutique, but you’ll also find Romantic era-inspired brocade coats and dresses, lace gloves, sailboat-shaped fascinators, and even plastic fangs to bring to the graveyard when you’re reciting Keats' poetry to your lost lover. Men are well catered for too here, with a tantalising range of satin shirts, bondage pants, PVC lace-up trousers and of course, the ubiquitous long black coat in various styles and materials. Fitzroy.

Vicious Venus

If you're of the rockabilly persuasion, prepare to have your mind blown. Vicious Venus is here to satisfy all your corsetry, creeper and pin up girl fantasies. Specialising in vintage and old Hollywood-inspired designs, this boutique will even tailor-make you a garment for the perfect fit. Brunswick.

Become the neo-Victorian baroness, adventure botanist or mad scientist you always knew you could be. Visage'n'Vice is one of the only stores where you can find online steampunk brands like Gallery Serpentine and Clockwork Butterfly. The range here is impressive, with just as many beautifully made accessories – including brass necklaces, bustle belts and burlesque nipple pasties – as men’s and women’s clothing. Corsets come in lots of colours, styles and sizes here. Melbourne.

Gents, don’t pretend you’ve never dreamed of strutting the streets in slick ’40s gangster garb, or decked out in top hat and cane as a debonair dandy. Think colourful suits, kitsch shirts and embroidered coats – all designed or sourced by Croation-born fashion guru Anton. It's the perfect place for men and women to get costumed up for a party – but don't discount adding a top-quality waistcoat or mohair coat to your everyday wardrobe. You can never be too well-dressed. Melbourne.

Downtown Revolution

Normally, claims like “the largest range of western/cowboy boots in Australia” makes us a little dubious – but honestly, you’d be hard-pressed to walk into a store and come across a bigger range of alternative footwear (boots included) than at this CBD boutique. Whether you’re jonesing for a new pair of Docs, creepers, black leather goth boots or leopard-print heels, chances are, the footwear you need to complete your look is here. Under renovations: re-opening September 2014. Melbourne.
