Time Out Melbourne

“When I’m walking down the street and I’m wearing a big gold corn chip, people ask, ‘Oh my god, is that a talisman?’ I’m like, ‘No, it’s actually a corn chip’.”

Melbourne gold and silversmith Lucy Folk began her jewellery design career by electroplating real corn chips and popcorn, never expecting her creations to form the basis of her mouth-watering jewellery collections. “My family’s been in hospitality, and I wanted to create jewellery that was inspired by food,” she explains. In her laneway boutique, fine gold and silver ‘watermelon pip’ bracelets sit alongside hand-engraved citrus slice necklaces. “It’s pretty kooky in here,” says the bubbly designer, gesturing to the mounted plates glinting on the exposed brick walls. “Everything has to reflect my personality – it’s my brand. I never focus on trends or stick to things that are safe. It’s really nice to express myself through what I do.”

For her latest collection, called Sugar, Folk has served up a buffet of rose gold and pearl bonbon earrings and cream tart rings. It's also her first foray into sunnies – complete with colourful chains.

Gift-wise, there's something for everyone, and prices range from $50 to under a grand. The New York Times may have recently dubbed her a “stand out,” but you’re still likely to be the only one at the party wearing sterling silver tortilla chip earrings.
