Time Out Melbourne

“When I’m walking down the street and I’m wearing a big gold corn chip, people ask, ‘Oh my god, is that a talisman?’ I’m like, ‘No, it’s actually a corn chip’.”

Melbourne gold and silversmith Lucy Folk began her jewellery design career by electroplating real corn chips and popcorn, never expecting her creations to form the basis of her mouth-watering jewellery collections. “My family’s been in hospitality, and I wanted to create jewellery that was inspired by food,” she explains. In her laneway boutique, fine gold and silver 'anchovy cuff' bracelets sit alongside coconut palm earrings with pearls as coconuts. “It’s pretty kooky in here,” says the bubbly designer, gesturing to the mounted plates glinting on the exposed brick walls. “Everything has to reflect my personality – it’s my brand. I never focus on trends or stick to things that are safe. It’s really nice to express myself through what I do.”

For her latest collection, called Tesoro, Folk has shifted from her fascination with food, and instead she has taken inspiration from a trip to the 2015 Venice Biennale and come up with delicate geometric designs.

Gift-wise, there's something for everyone, from fancy friendship bracelets under $100 to wedding and engagement rings for a few grand. The New York Times have dubbed her a “stand out", and sure enough, you’re likely to be the only one at the party wearing sterling silver anchovy bangles.
