ANZAC Day is a time to reflect on what it means to be Australian, and there’s few things more typically Aussie than having a pie at the footy, surrounded by crazed fans. The annual ANZAC Day clash between Essendon and Collingwood has become one of the AFL’s biggest events of the year, outside of the finals season.
Before the game, a moving ceremony is held to pay tribute to the men and women who have served in war. Afterwards, one player is awarded with the ANZAC Medal for showing qualities that align with the ANZAC spirit. Skill, courage, self-sacrifice, teamwork and fair play are acknowledged.
