Time Out Melbourne

This contact sport on wheels sees ‘jammers’ attempt to score points by skating past players from the opposing team on the track. Roller derby has experienced a revival in recent years after decades as a largely scripted sport where the focus was on the spectacle as opposed to sportsmanship. While creative names and costumes are still part of the rockabilly appeal, its authenticity has been restored by the thousands of dedicated leagues around the world. Participants must be over 18.

Victorian Roller Derby League wReck classes, VRDL training facility, Preston. Register: freshmeat@vrdl.org. $35 for three sessions. Noon-2pm. Sundays.
