Time Out Melbourne

The sports entertainment mecca that rose from the Docklands mud

Once a swampy backwater, Docklands are now home to one of the most advanced sports and music stadiums in the world, Etihad Stadium (nee Colonial Stadium, nee Telstra Dome).

Every year the venue hosts upward of 50 AFL home and away matches, six Hyundai A-League soccer matches, a Bledisloe Cup rugby union test match (Australia v New Zealand) and a handful of National Rugby League games too, not to mention musical acts like AC/DC, Neil Diamond, U2 and Barbra Streisand.

With 15 corporate rooms and 2500 undercover car spaces and capacity for 70,000 people, this arena is positively space-age, with a retractable roof to foil Melbourne's notoriously fickle weather, Stadium Grow Lights simulating sunlight and generating warmth and sustainability programme that, by mid-2010, had harvested 17.8 million litres of rainfall.

Crowd records include 56,605 for the Wallabies v British Lions rugby union match in 2001, 64,619 fans for Robbie Williams in 2006 and 70,000 for a Catholic Jubilee Mass in November 2000.
