Time Out Melbourne

This event has finished

In Ghosts, Ibsen was at the very top of his game, writing with a kind of bleakly perfected concision and an unflinching feel for tearing down petty-bourgeois hypocrisies. This is the play that confirmed Ibsen's reputation as the great dramatist of family life, and a ruthless critic of our modern habits of self-deception.

Mrs Alving is opening a new orphanage and dedicating it to the memory of her late husband, a memorial to his good name in the community. But what kind of man was the late Mr Alving?

Director Gale Edwards is a unique Australian asset. There's no one quite like Gale. In 2014 it will have been 25 years since she last tackled Ibsen – her celebrated Belvoir production of A Doll's House – but now she's back, working with Pip Edwards, Richard Piper and Philip Quast at the Melbourne Theatre Company.
