Yearning for fame? Louris van de Geer has been waiting for you

Truth or Consequences is a small desert city in New Mexico. Once upon a time it was called Hot Springs, but back in 1950 the town changed its name as part of a publicity stunt organised by a television game show – yes, the game show called Truth or Consequences.

So entirely did the town embrace its new identity that game show host Ralph Edwards returned every year as guest of honour at the town's annual fiesta, right up to his death in 2005. There's even a park named after him, as well as extensive Ralph Edwards archives in the local library

This completely awesome story of small-town American enthusiasm is the starting point for Louris van de Geer's new play Hello there, we've been waiting for you, which premieres as part of the 2014 Next Wave festival.

"It centres on a girl competing in the Truth or Consequences beauty pageant," explains van de Geer, "who wants to meet Ralph Edwards and tell him about her plan to become the mayor."

The play is directed by Samara Hersch and will be performed in one of the ACMI studio spaces, dressed to resemble a television studio. It features Genevieve Giuffre, Susie Dee, Don Bridges, and Aaron Orzech.
