Time Out Melbourne

Get your start in cabaret with this course from the experts

For eight weeks, Melbourne’s cabaret production dream team, David Read and Neville Sice, will be teaching a DIY Cabaret workshop. The co-producers of Australian Cabaret Enterprises and Melbourne Cabaret Festival will be running the workshop once a week, covering everything you need to know about producing your own show; from marketing and publicity, to dealing with venues and how to set up ticketing, to insurance and budgeting. “It’s basically going to cover everything that Neville and I have learnt over the past 16 years, condensed into a nice little package of weekly sessions,” says Read.

Read and Sice got their start in the industry after purchasing the Butterfly Club in 2003 and putting on shows as a hobby. Eight years later, after being consumed by the club, and watching a lot of great shows come and go, they mulled over the problem of shows having such short lifespans. “They were performed once, usually to family and friends, and then no one else sees them – there were no good avenues for artists to take their work.” This was the impetus to starting the Melbourne Cabaret Festival back in 2009, so that a wider audience could appreciate these shows – it now attracts over 15,000 punters.

“There’s not a night that goes by in Melbourne when there’s not a cabaret show on. The trick is to know where they are and find your favourites,” says Read. “This is one of the main reasons we want to do DIY workshops, because cabaret is not just about putting on a good show, it’s also having the skills to make sure people find out about it.”
