Written by Juan Mayorga, Himmelweg tells the tale of a rare inspection by the Red Cross of the Nazi-run Theresienstadt Concentration Camp in 1944. Expecting revalations of genocide and extreme maltreatment of the Jewish people, the inspectors instead found what appeared to be relative comfort and an ease of living.
On their official tour, inspectors were fooled by the Nazi's façade and were left with a positive impression that went against tales of starvation and gas chambers, throwing those rumours into doubt. What these inspectors were witnessing, however, was not a genuine representation of life in a concentration camp, but the Nazi's propaganda juggernaut in full swing and forced performances from the prisoners.
