Minchin and Mel C get holy

First published on . Updated on .

Andrew Lloyd Webber's arena-rock musical Jesus Christ Superstar is coming to Melbourne with an all-star cast, a killer rock'n'roll creative team and a big promise of being darn spectacular. Our very own funny-man Tim Minchin will be playing Judas Iscariot alongside former Spice Girl, Melanie C, as Mary Magdalene.

Tim Minchin, as we discovered, is a longstanding fan of the musical. "Jesus Christ Superstar is something I’ve always adored," he told Time Out. "I did the show as a young guy in Perth and understudied Jesus, and told anybody who has listened for the last ten years that I’ve always wanted to play Judas, and one day I’ll do it. It’s sort of a joke, you know, because it’s such a huge role that I didn’t know if I actually physically could do it vocally. It’s just so much fun that I can’t believe it."

Relative new-comer Ben Forster leading the cast as Jesus. Oh and Deal or No Deal star Andrew O'Keefe will be playing King Herod and Jon Stevens will be returning to the musical after 18 years to play Pontius Pilate.
