Emma Matthews reprises the role of Partenope

Director Christopher Alden’s spare, modernist setting of Handel's Partenope has been dividing audiences since it premiered at the English National Opera in 2008. Re-imagined among the well-heeled art crowd of Paris in the 1920s, Handel's heroine pits her suitors one against each as she plunges her country into war.

This is a rare Handel opera rarely seen in Australia. Alden's version is a racy English-language translation which won an Olivier Award for Best New Opera Production.
