The People vs George Lucas

Given this doc’s view on both parties, whoever wins… we all lose

George Lucas created the Star Wars universe, but it’s a generation of moviegoers who’ve turned the franchise into a religion – and they’re very displeased with their bearded deity. Alexandre O Philippe’s documentary on the relationship between Lucas and those who love his films not wisely but too well works best as a portrait of fan pathology, with disciples treating the director’s digital tinkering and piss-poor prequels as ridiculously personal affronts. (Memo to Most Irate Talking Head: Lucas ignoring theatrical cuts is not the same as being “a Holocaust denier.” Just sayin’.) Once this cultural exploration devolves into just a forum for grating geek griping and Jar-Jar Binks hatred, however, you’ll wish you could escape to a galaxy far, far away. Extras: Big Fan Boy Interview with director Alexandre O Philippe, Fan Submission: Edward Hines, Music Video: Hot Waffles, "George Lucas Raped Our Childhood", How George Lucas Might F*ck Up Indiana Jones 4, The People vs George Lucas 3D.

The People vs George Lucas is released on DVD/Blu-ray through Hopscotch on Wed 22 Feb.
