Time Out talks local live music with Despina Bedovian from Tone Control, a new TV show profiling the best of Melbourne’s live music

What inspired you to start the show?
As music lovers, musicians and avid gig-goers we wanted to produce a show that showcases and supports Melbourne’s and Australia’s musicians. It wasn’t going to be another music clip video show as we wanted to show what artists do best - and that’s play live.

It was also to give up-and-coming artists the chance to be seen live and to provide them the opportunity to show their talents to a wider audience. Also, we wanted to produce a program that brings in all sorts of styles and genres and make it accessible to a diverse range of viewers. The music scene in Melbourne is so diverse and Tone Control reflects that.

There wasn’t anything like Tone Control on Australian television - so we got a great team together and we started our own show that features live music and Melbourne’s thriving live music scene.

How do you go about unearthing the bands you feature?
We unearth the bands we feature by going to gigs, buying CDs, listening to the radio and reading street press.

What's the format?
The focus of Tone Control is live music. Tone Control features live performances filmed in the studio with an assortment of musicians and artists, ranging from established bands to and up-and-coming talent. Each show will consist of four artists performing live. There will also be short interviews in later episodes featured during the show.

Do you have a live audience for any parts of the show and if so, how can people join in?
There isn’t a live audience for the show but we do encourage living room Tone Control viewing parties. We are busy organising a massive end of season gig which will feature a number of the bands and artists who have performed on Tone Control.

How often will it be screening - weekly or monthly?
Tone Control will screen weekly – every Monday night at 7:30 pm on Channel 31 (Digital 44). Put it your calendars!

If we miss the show on Channel 31, can we catch the show online?
We’ll have the performances from the show on the Tone Control website. We’ll also have awesome extra content including bonus live footage and interviews with artists and bands on the website.

What is it about Melbourne's live music scene that makes it so special?
The quality, quantity and diversity of Melbourne’s live music scene sets it apart from the rest of Australia and the rest of the world. On any night of the week you can witness high quality live music, be it an indie dance band, a mariachi band or an acoustic folk troubadour.  Our live music culture and the support and camaraderie of Melbourne’s scene is also unique to Melbourne.

Tone Control screens on Channel 31 7.30pm Mondays
