Art is oftentimes
limited to a single sensory experience. The visual pleasure of a painting, the
aural satisfaction of an aria or the texture of an intricate tapestry. Blank_Space gallery's latest offering, however, is a collation of all five, with artists commissioned to create a work in response
to the "essence of black". The resulting exhibition is a sensory journey through
sight, touch, sound, smell and taste.
First up is sight. AFI Award-winning team People's Republic of Animation have produced a visually striking
journey through art history. Fashion photographer Cameron Grayson has fused
together black perspex and photographic image to produce a work that reflects the visually unexpected. And artist James McGrath has created a video
installation that causes viewers to reassess the ways that they
interpret what they see.
For the more tactile out there, the touch space will house a paper sculpture from Benja Harney, a leather piece from bespoke shoemaker Andrew McDonald, a glass sculpture from Morgan Shimeld and a metal work from jewellery designer Matt Weston.
Next, in the sound space, listeners will become aurally attuned with Tom Schutzinger's immersing soundscape. Schutzinger, a member of Decoder Ring, has created a beautiful score in response to the essence of black.
As for smell, Spanish perfumer Agusti Vidal has created a black fragrance, rich and spicy with hints of chocolate.
Only counted four senses so far? Well, the Smirnoff sponsored exhibition has the taste element well and truly covered. The distinctive taste of Smirnoff Black vodka will be available for sampling. Art and an aperitif - here's cheers!
