Every festival needs a good HQ, and it doesn’t get much better than Fringe’s tiki-themed hub of hedonism
Newtonians will have to wait until october for the big reopening of their beloved newtown Hotel, but all through September the multi-floored venue’s mix of music, booze, food and good times will be jam-packed into the fringe festival’s pop-up bar five eliza. and, in a nod to the warming weather and the left-of-field-ness of the fringe, five eliza is going tiki – expect garden furniture, voodoo flavour and tropical fun, mon.
You can also expect an excellent mix of entertainment, ranging from live music and burlesque to video games, arts markets and fringe-themed workshops. our top pick – and call us boozers if you must – is five eliza’s series of absinth master Classes (Sep 14, 22 and 29 from 3-5pm). Hosted by absinthe expert Gee David, class-goers learn all about the sometimes-forbidden libation, how to make some damn delicious green-tinged cocktails and get to sample some of the goods (score!). You’ll want to book a spot early.
We’re also hanging out for the fringe artist markets (Sun Sep 9, 1-4pm) – because the best art is on the edges – and HaHa DJs Dean Dixon and Dave fernandez’s D&D’s Beat Ballroom nights (Sep 13, 20 and 27 from 7pm) where handpicked beats meet visual art on the dance floor. if you’re looking for something to do after a fringe show, or just want to get into the festival spirit, Five Eliza has you covered and then some.
