Get ready – the Sydney Royal Easter Show is in town!
When the country comes to the city we line up with glee to ride rollercoasters and stuff our faces with lollies. Each year there are as many as 14,000 animals on site, ranging from alpacas to baby chicks. You'll find the usual array of fairground rides, from thrill seekers to tea cups and super slides for the little ones.
Kids will marvel at this year's entertainment line-up, which features the Dinosaur Ice World, an interactive walk-through exhibition that brings the prehistoric world to life. They can confront a life-sized woolly mammoth, a family of penguins and walk alongside animated dinosaurs.
Visit Dinosaur Ice World and you could also win a family trip to London by finding the missing Tablet from Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb – which is available on Digital HD from iTunes now.
Lovable owls Hoot and Hootabelle will appear at the Show for the first time this year with a special show featuring songs from their popular ABC series and plenty of dancing to excite little ones.
Other exciting offerings include the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Live on Stage, My Little Pony Live on Stage, a meet-and-greet with the Transformers and Zimboyz, a dizzying, high-energy performance starring three African acrobats who'll defy gravity and wow the crowds with their strength.
Among the agricultural attractions worth a visit are the District Exhibits featuring 50,000 pieces of fruit (commemorating the 100th anniversary of ANZAC Gallipoli landing); a Food Farm where kids can get hands-on experience learning how to prepare healthy dishes; a Working Dairy where you can watch how milk goes from cow to refrigerator, and areas where you can pet a pig, wash a chicken or marvel at a four-horned sheep.
And you won't want to miss the chance to see the Sydney Royal Woodchopping and Sawing Competition, a favourite at the Show for more than a century. More than 200 competitors from Australia and overseas will compete across a whopping 65 classes in the "Wimbledon of Woodchopping", as they attempt to fell trees, saw their way to victory and vie for world championship titles in one of the most exciting sports you'll see in this or any other year.
All this fun will work up an appetite, and the Show has plenty to sate punters this year. Snacks on sticks are always popular at the Show – the usual suspects (strawberries, chips, and cheese) will again be sold, and this year they've added cake on a stick to the menu at the Carousel Café. The popular waffle dog returns this year after a hugely successful run in 2014, try the two-foot O.M.G D.O.G (best when shared!), or grab some pizza singles or crumbed chicken tenderloins from the Snack Shack.
Or why not go in for a Sydney Royal Talk & Taste session? It's an absolute steal at $15 per ticket (please note: does not include entry) and will get food and wine lovers a chance to hear from producers, sample Sydney Royal medal-winning products and meet food experts at four daily sessions.
