Time Out Sydney

Boy, oh, boy! You’ve got to be brave to take the plunge in the annual ocean swim with a difference

Last year a thousand people ditched their clothes and swam in the ocean together in Sydney’s most exhibitionist sports event. The Sydney Skinny first launched in 2013, an idea by Nigel Marsh, the author of Fat, Forty and Fired and Fit, Fifty and Fired-Up. Marsh came up with the concept after he was caught short without swimmers and decided to take a dip in the ocean anyway – it was a hot day, we’ve all been there.

Since then the ocean swim has developed into two designated swims: one at 300 metres and another at 900 metres. Neither one is timed, nor are they considered a ‘race’. The goal here is to overcome the fear of being nude in front of strangers (who don’t really care/think about how naked you are anyway).

Time Out’s Lifestyle editor took the plunge in the first year. Her advice is to drunkenly convince a friend to join you, so you can share in the pre-event butterflies together. It also helps if you can figure out a no-go stare zone. Maybe stand side-by-side if you’re feeling shy.

Top tip: Don’t over-think it. Drop the towel, run into the water and swim. Worry about how you’re going to get out of the water when that moment comes.
