Future Development of Darling Harbour

First published on 25 Mar 2008. Updated on 31 May 2009.

Now

A badly designed concrete jungle, bisected by the brutalist stylings of the Western Distributor that feeds the Glebe Island Bridge, Darling Harbour is dominated by huge steel convention centres and endless paving.

Future

A huge green space nearly the size of Hyde Park would revitalise the city centre's western edge and spark a more active waterfront leading to new commercial and residential opportunities in the old convention centre site and at neighbouring Barangaroo. The Western Distributor would be buried below ground, sinking the hulking concrete motorway which brutalises the western side of the city, allowing superior pedestrian access to the foreshore, facilitating better connections to King Street Wharf, encouraging a more diverse and intimate night time culture and nourishing the area via rejuvenated streets, parks and promenades.
