Sydney's best food shops

Chefs Warehouse
This shop is an absolute wonderland for chefs and food-obsessed punters alike. You'll find everything from pots and pans to plates, and a very broad and affordable range of copper here. Insider tip: it's also a very good place to buy Maldon salt cheaply.
Surry Hills

Essential Ingredient
The best place around for boutique ingredients including gold leaf, moulds and duck fat is Essential Ingredient. It's particularly handy for baking and patisserie accessories, and they carry a really splendid range of tagines. Crows Nest

Fiji Market
Flying Fish chef and author Peter Kuruvita is a big fan of Fiji Market for all things Sri Lankan. The range of exotic spices here is huge, as is the range of dry goods. They also sell bangles, sarongs and silk-covered shoes - but we're here for the foodstuffs.
Newtown

Fratelli Fresh
If fresh international produce tickles your whiskers, make a beeline for Fratelli Fresh. You'll find teeny-tiny pickling onions, single varietal apple juice as well as a world of dry goods upstairs such as artisan pasta, olives, capers and chocolate.
Waterloo

Herbie's
There are more spices available at Herbie's than you can poke a cinnamon stick at. Need freeze-dried green peppercorns? Pfft - easy. Want to make your own mustard? The Herbie's team can help you. There are even spice appreciation courses to help you get the most out of your cooking.
Rozelle

Pasta Emilia
The best fresh pasta in Sydney is from a tiny shop in Bronte. Anna Maria makes everything from scratch, down to picking the nettles herself for the nettle ravioli. The little shopfront has queues down the road.
Bronte

Pontip
All the major Thai chefs in town get their ingredients here and it's no wonder: you'll find everything you need to make a Thai feast from longans to those tiny little red hot chillies and dried baby shrimp.
Haymarket

Simon Johnson
Sydney's best known providore may be harsh on the hip pocket but Simon Johnson stocks products you'd be hard pressed to find anywhere else, including the super tasty Ortiz anchovies. The cheese room is not to be missed.
Pyrmont

Sonoma
Completely organic and commercial yeast-free, you'll find Sonoma sourdough on the tables at many of Sydney's best restaurants, and it also makes excellent breakfast fodder. We love the soy and linseed - it's studded with whole soybeans. Yum.
