'Seven miles from Sydney, a thousand miles from care'

It's as true of Manly today as it was when the slogan was coined by the Port Jackson & Manly Steamship Company back in 1940.

Of course, the quiet seaside town of yesteryear is now a thriving mini-metropolis and the spectacular beachfront promenade for which Manly is revered worldwide acts as a gateway into a vibrant Sydney village teeming with shops, bars, cafés, restaurants, nightlife and an array of activities that make Manly one of the great jewels in Sydney's crown.

But, as this special Time Out guide of highlights proves, Manly is as much about the journey as the destination. And what better way to travel that seven miles across Sydney Harbour than by sea? Then, as now, for locals and visitors alike, a ferry to Manly remains the surest and most sensational way to get a thousand miles from care.
