Alley oop!

The sleepy parks and hidden alleys around Circular Quay will come alive this weekend when the annual St Jerome’s Laneway Festival hits Sydney from 12pm this Sunday. With ARIA award winner Gotye and Grammy award nominee Feist in the line up, the Laneway Festival has come a long way since its humble beginnings as a small block party. “We just decided to throw a street party,” explains the festival’s co-promoter Danny Rogers. “My friend owns St Jerome’s pub in Melbourne and we arranged to have some bands play in the laneway outside…and the rest is history.” This uniquely urban festival is now held in the laneways of Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Adelaide and has become a landmark event on the calendar for indie music lovers. The geography of inner city streets and parks limits the size of the audience. “The Laneway Festival can’t ever get too big. It’s intimate,” and according to Rogers, “that’s why it really stands out.”
