Bourke Street, Woolloomooloo

No longer just a great hub of pubs, Woolloomooloo now boasts great shopping and art

A serious dose of Potts Point's sleek-and-chic charm has been injected into the Woolloomooloo end of Bourke Street. But don't expect to find the street overrun with pram-pushers just yet. The little collective of creative and retail spaces is still firmly plugged into the gritty and underground vibes of bordering suburbs Kings Cross and Darlinghurst and we'd happily spend the afternoon taking in what it has to offer.

Sable & Argent
If you're thinking of joining Sydney's cycling revolution, this bike shop is a good place to start. And if you're not convinced, then a peek at the cycling eye-candy on the other side of the Sable & Argent roller door could well change your mind. The place also carries Spring Courts sneakers, makes a mean brew and has a well stocked bookshelf for devouring during a retail rest. 85 Bourke St, Woolloomooloo 2011. (02 9357 4699). Mon–Fri 8am–6pm; Sat 10am–6pm.

Monstrosity Gallery
This small artist-run contemporary art space is dedicated to prioritising wall space to emerging artists in all mediums. On any given visit expect to find illustration, textile work, street art or sculpture and don't be surprised if you happen upon a little screen printing workshop in progress while you're there. 93 Bourke St, Woolloomooloo 2011. Wed–Sun 11am–6pm.

The r.e.a.l Store
Virginia Bruce, owner and founder, stocks only products that align with social, ethical and sustainable design practices. From Hands garments made with cotton farmed at a sustainable Turkish cooperative, to the Prison Blues clothing made by Oregon inmates as part of a rehabilitation programme, everything subscribes to the philosophy and a cut of the proceeds from many goes to charity. 91 Bourke St, Woolloomooloo 2011. (02 8356 9993). Mon–Fri 9am–5pm; Sat 10am–5pm.

Temperature Design

Grazia Materia and Vicki Corbett's boutique design group has been adding charm to Australian homes, shops and bars since 2005. With everything from beautifully upholstered ottomans and nifty lighting to greenie eco solutions, you could easily deck out your dream pad with just a turn about the room. 97 Bourke St, Woolloomooloo 2011. (02 9331 0116). By appointment.
