Set in 105 hectares (260 acres) of parkland, Old Government House was built between 1799 and 1818 on the foundations of Governor Phillip’s 1790 thatched cottage, which had collapsed, and is Australia’s oldest public building. At times serving as everything from a vice-regal residence to a boarding house for local schoolboys, the building has been restored to its former glory by a multi-million-dollar revamp. It also boasts the nation’s most important collection of Australian colonial furniture, while the ghost tours on the third Friday evening of every month are a hoot. CityRail/RiverCat Parramatta then 15mins walk. Open 10am-4pm Mon-Fri; 10.30am-4pm Sat, Sun. Admission $8; $5 reductions; $18 family.
