A Western Australian photographer captures the wonder of the city and the natural environment at Ken Duncan Gallery in The Rocks
The sites he photographs may be inherently beautiful in themselves – the crepuscular light of the morning sun emerging through the clouds, a forest bursting with autumn golds and reds, a colourful cliff-top village facing an approaching storm, a powerful wave gathering momentum as it comes towards the shore – but Steve Fraser strives to capture more than just the physical landscape in his panoramic pictures. Fraser hopes to evoke states of mind: inspiration, majesty, grace, serenity.
The other emotion Fraser’s images overwhelmingly (however unwittingly) evoke is envy. An exhibition (and companion publication) of Fraser’s work, Moments in the Light, documents the photographer’s two-year-long expedition to picturesque locations in Australia and some of the most photogenic locations the rest of the world has to offer.
The interplay of light and colour is beautiful throughout: the pinks and purples of a beach sunrise, the astonishing yellows of a spectacular sunset over the water.
More than that, Fraser is able to convey something in each new scene that will speak to anyone receptive to the wisdom he has acquired on his extensive international travels – and his internal journey of the soul.
Fraser’s exhibition is hosted by Australia’s leading panoramic landscape photographer Ken Duncan – the first time Duncan has opened up his galleries to another artist. “I just feel so privileged to be launching Steve’s work here in Australia,” Duncan says. “We always planned for our galleries to be market leaders showcasing the very best of Australian photographic talent – and that’s got to be about more than me. There is a depth to Steve’s work that is bold and refreshing and we believe it will add a new dimension to the photographic offerings in our galleries.”
