Located in the stairway of Darlinghurst Road bar the Sugarmill, the new space opened with an exhibition of work by ten artists from the outrageous urban art collective 'StupidKrap!'
The ABSOLUT Stairwell Gallery is the latest instalment of the Dialogue PR's ‘Dead Space Living Artists' initiative, aimed at converting neglected and unused spaces across Sydney into active culture pockets.
"A normal gallery won't get much traffic during the week," says Dialogue's Justin Levy. "Here we've got a spot with hundreds of people walking through it every week. From the artist's point of view, the more people seeing the art the better."
The stairwell of the Sugarmill has been decorated wall-to-wall with a riot of graffiti stretching over three levels. These designs are by leading Sydney graffiti art group the Movement.
Adorning these eye-catching walls will be hung the StupidKrap! artworks. StupidKrap! is the brainchild of Sydney artist Ben Frost, a provocative pop collagist whose works are simultaneously cute, violent and erotic.
Other members of the collective in the show include Kiss Kiss, Kill Pixie and Beastman. Works on display are for sale, with all proceeds going to the artist.
New exhibitions will be launched monthly at the ABSOLUT Stairwell Gallery.
