Top 5 bars to visit in May

From classics to newbies, scene bars to dives, these are the hottest places in Sydney to drink right now

The Anchor

8 Campbell Parade, Bondi Beach

Andy Penney has left 21 and donned shorts and boat shoes to captain the good ship Anchor. Daquiris any way you like ’em (Nuclear, Hemingway, shaken and slushified); tequila to send you sideways and a surprisingly impressive wine list. Set sail on the 333 to Bondi.

Assembly

488 Kent St, Sydney

Ignore the atmosphere and stop being annoyed you had trouble finding it. Assembly are doing some truly kick-arse drinks. Try a Bosom Inspector: Cognac, Grand Marnier, grenadine and egg yolk, shaken and "more socially acceptable to have in your hands and could even lead to the real thing…"

Wine Library

18 Oxford St, Woollahra

There’s no wine bar that encourages a really serious legs-up session the way the Wine Library does. Whatever’s in the air there gives us the kind of thirst that can only be quenched by some freaky wine. And that, they have in spades.

Hotel Hollywood

2 Foster St, Surry Hills

The art deco façade is looking a little careworn. And that '70s blue carpet job is starting to fray. But when the lights are down low and the mirror ball is gently spinning, there’s no finer place to be in all of Sydney.

Black Bar

The Star, Pirrama Rd, Pyrmont

On your way to Momofuku or Balla? Stop by this truly excellent cocktail boozertorium for hand-cut ice, top-shelf spirits and drinks made with care. Drink in style at this classic cocktail bar with all the trimmings.
