A great bet for history buffs and craft beer fans, the Lord Nelson provides plenty of inspiration for lively discussion. Nothing says romance like an open fire, so settle in by the hearth, order a ploughman's lunch and one of six award-winning ales brewed on premises – we reckon you are definitely in with a shot.

Sommelier Matt Swieboda has turned a dank storeroom out the back of Crown Street's Best Cellars into an excellent little wine bar. There are some of the most exciting wines you’re likely to taste here, and if food is on the cards, take a look at the menu scrawled on the walls of this tightly packed little venue.

This lively little bar is a top spot for date night. Catch up over a quiet drink during the week or get in early at the week’s end to secure one of the cosy couches upstairs. The cocktail menu changes regularly, but it’s consistently good – order a barrel-aged Negroni if it’s available – or just keep things simple with a craft beer and a bowl or three of buttery, seasoned popcorn.

Mojo Record Bar

Bar manager Natalie Ng and team recently opened the doors on this excellent little bar, just across the hall from Mojo Records. There's no food, but they'll order you a pizza if need be. Aim for an early date –before 8.30pm – so that you can take your drink through to the record shop and play the ultimate getting to know you game: “Which records would you save in the event of a zombie apocalypse?”

Harlem on Central is a high-class hideaway serving slick drinks in low light. They're going for an uptown speakeasy vibe that is understated in its opulence and believe us, everyone looks good against a black, crocodile-leather banquette or on silver velvet chaise. Order a mix of the pulled pork, buttermilk fried chicken and pork and veal meatball sliders for share-friendly snacks that won’t leave any green in your teeth. Practise delicate eating in the lead-up.

Bucket List is a prime day-date location. It's all about jugs of Pimms and buckets of prawns at this casual, sprawling restaurant and bar. Being right on the Bondi promenade, it’s perfect for people watching, and as far as impressive backdrops go, you’d be hard pressed finding anything to beat Bondi Beach. Bring your togs for a quick dip and then get comfortable on the reclining, wooden deck chairs and dry off with an icy Corona in hand.

The Hazy Rose

The Hazy Rose is a welcoming, Deco-style bar in a classic Darlinghurst terrace. The black wallpaper keeps the light low and flattering and classic cocktails help ease the nerves. For a private nook you can slide into one of the wooden booths, or if conversation needs stimulating take a seat at the bar and watch the bartenders at work.
