All hail Arthur's Day

Australia is taking part in a global toast on Friday 25 September to commemorate the legacy of Arthur Guinness and his legendary brew, and some of Sydney's finest Irish pubs are set to participate. It has been 250 years since the Guinness founder signed the 9,000-year lease on the St James Gate Brewery in Dublin, a feat every bit as impressive as it sounds.

At 17.59pm (an ingenious bit of planning there), participating Sydney-side pubs will raise their glasses to the man who founded one of the world's most successful beers. The official party for New South Wales is being held at The Mercantile, the iconic Irish pub in The Rocks, where guests can enjoy live music and a countdown to the prestigious moment of glory as well as screenings from all the action on the other side of the world in Dublin.

Other participating venues in and around the city include PJ O'Brien's in the CBD, Durty Nelly's at Paddington, the Mean Fiddler at Rouse Hill and PJ Gallagher's at Parramatta. In a worldwide wave of toasts, one of the last stops on the celebratory circuit is Australia, ensuring the two-day global festivities end with a bang Arthur would be bloody proud of.
