Top 5 Bloody Marys

A Bloody Mary isn't just tomato juice and vodka with a bit of celery stuck in the glass for decoration

No, a Bloody Mary is more than that – it’s a heart-starting legend of Tomato juice, pepper, ice, a dash of Worcestershire, lemon juice. And if you’re feeling a little fancy, a splash of dry sherry. Here are Time Out’s  picks of the best.

1 Longrain
The prima ballerina of Bloody Marys. The secret here is in the chilli jam/cucumber-instead-of-celery combo. Lots of ice, lots of pep and lots of kick. Prop up the bar with one of these bad boys for an instant pick-me-up.
Surry Hills

2 Flying Squirrel
Okay, so it’s a bloody Caesar (the difference being Clamato juice, which the guys here bring in from Canada). And before you ask, Clamato juice is a mix of clam broth, reconstituted tomato juice with a dash of corn syrup. But even so, the basic makeup is much the same, if not a bit tastier for the added mouthfeel the clam broth gives it.
Bondi

3 The Exchange
The Bloody Mary Breakfast Club runs every Saturday and for $9.50 you’ll get a BM, a breakfast and tea or coffee – you don’t get much better than that. The heritage building is huge and houses five different bars and plenty of events running through the week (they also have a Martini club).
Balmain

4 The Bourbon and The Cross
Watch your bags, wallets, and the shoes on your feet. One of Kings Cross’s most notorious and beloved nightspots stays open all night and sells a cracking Bloody Mary just when you need one (the 5am cab drought is usually when the craving hits). It opened in the late 60s to attract soldiers on R&R and it certainly did the trick – this place attracts more sailor boys than Oxford Street.

5 Sugaroom
Bloody Marys are more of a breakfast/brunch thing than a lunch or dinner thing but seeing as these guys only open lunch onwards, you’ll just have to make do. It’s always cool to see these on any menu and lounging back with one pre-lunch is a bloody great treat.
