The Royal got the thumbs up from us last year for the cheap schooners and this year it gets the same. Up top, the Elephant Bar used to be a Paddington institution back in the early noughties and while it hasn’t returned to the same glory, it’s still a great hidden bar that so many forget about. If you make it up the stairs, you’ll find happy hour from 5.30-6.30pm daily and a terrace that offers stunning views across Paddington to Sydney Harbour. But you don’t really even need happy hour because all of the cocktails – from Martinis to Sours, Margaritas and Mojitos – are $14. That’s right: $14. The restaurant on the first floor was also a Paddo institution, but nowadays it’s at its best for a Sunday roast or a long Saturday lunch.
