The Spanish Club

First published on . Updated on 14 Sep 2011.

Reigning over Sydney’s laughably tiny Spanish Quarter, the downstairs bar at the Spanish Club is nothing special, but upstairs the restaurant is a whole other story. Conquistador chic? Iberico has it in spades. Eating at Iberico feels a little like you are in Cortes’ own dining room, what with the cast iron chandelier, coats of arms and colonial paintings.

First off you’ll want a jug or two of the house sangria. The chilled red wine punch barely touches the sides and the apple and orange pieces make handy pre-dinner snacks. The tapas here are nothing like the finicky little morsels you find at some of the more fashionable Spanish restaurants. The little champagne mushrooms come out piled high on a dish and absolutely swimming in a salty cream sauce. The finger scorching prawns are also plentiful and bathed in garlic butter. Mop it up all with some crusty bread. The meatballs in tomato salsa are a good choice if you would like to avoid epic garlic breath.

Get arroz con leche (rice pudding) for dessert but be warned: if you are after something ‘wafer thin’ then this is not for you - it’s really a meal in itself. Although it looks a little dated, the Spanish Club is a great inner city spot for dinner and drinks, drop by and say ‘hola’ sometime.
