Walk into the East Village now and you’d never guess that in the 1920s and 30s it was Sydney’s bloodiest pub. Then known as The Trades- man’s Arms, it was an epicentre of prostitution, drugs, gambling and violence in ’Tilly’ Devine’s gangland of ‘Razorhurst’. Today it’s a friendly, quiet Darlinghurst local where you can get a table and have a chat – although on Friday and Saturday, the decks in the corner get a noisy workout. The drinks are reasonable ($6.50 for a glass of Oyster Bay red or white, or $12 for a potent cocktail) and so are the meals ($6–$10).
They have trivia on Tuesdays and salsa classes on Wednesdays and Thursdays. Also, Sydney's fruit bat population form a sky tide at sunset as they wing their way to Centennial Park. Cool.
