The 'Fitz has considerably more uses than your average pub. The joint houses an in-demand theatre space and a kitchen run by Hamish Ingham – one of our favourite up-and-coming chefs. There's a fireplace, a pool table, some of the nicest bar staff in the city. They host short film nights, trivia competitions and live music. Basically, if you’re luckily enough to call Old Fitzroy your local, you’d never feel the need to cheat on her. You won’t find a cocktail list here, just a good range of beers with a few international picks, and a brief wine list. The food, though, is exceptional, and a welcome change from the greasy laksa joint that used to occupy the Old Fitzroy kitchen. Order a mix of sang choi bau, beef short ribs and fresh noodle salads and take a seat in the lantern covered outdoor dining area. With hunger sated, head inside and strike up a conversation with one of the colourful locals. You may well find yourself happily in the grips of a late-night lock-in – which is fine, because once you’ve visited the 'Fitz chances are you’ll never want to leave.
