Winery by Gazebo is a rambling, sprawling irreverent homage to wine, consumed loudly without a care in the world

First published on . Updated on .

The Gazebo portfolio has perfected the formula for bars that are as inviting by day as by night. It might be something about the combination of fairy lights, silk flowers, garden ornaments and curly furniture but there's just no room for brawling here. Unless it is actually raining we say head for the courtyard, which is much quieter than inside, and secure a garden bench to rest your jug of sangria on. If you prefer to get your international kicks from a glass bottle with a cork rather than a Contiki tour, this is a good place to start. The wines by the glass provide a round the world trip for your taste buds, taking you to France, Argentina, the US, Germany, Portugal and back home again in a matter of hours. The beers cater for those who rate quality over quantity with some great domestic craft beers, like the Moo Brew heferweizen. But if your ale philosophy is ‘more is more’, they also have Reschs and Coopers longnecks, plus four craft beers in oversize bottles, including the Chevalier Biere de Garde from Beechworth that comes in a Champagne bottle. The food menu may leave a small dent in your wallet but we say there is adventure to be had in a $19 sausage roll. Failing that, nothing accompanies a cold beer like onion rings or some chilli olives. Celebrating? If you really want to make a scene tell the staff it's someone’s birthday and handsome lads will promptly dance around you, sparklers in hand, to Duck Sauce’s ‘Barbara Streisand’ or some equivalent ear worm blaring from a boom box. You’re welcome.
